Can you become a general member of Alpha Kappa Alpha even if your school has an undergraduate chapter?

I have wanted to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha for years; I feel that I uphold the sorority's national standards and ideals. However, I do not want to be affiliated with the chapter at my university because I know for a fact that they undergo illegal processes before rush (I know this because I experienced hazing in various forms from these girls). Also, I do not want to be affiliated with a chapter that hazes because it could get me in trouble for something I do not condone; not only that, but the girls have made it seem like I will not become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha unless I subject myself to their illegal procedures. Any suggestions, especially when it comes to becoming a general member while there is an Alpha Kappa Alpha undergrad chapter at my school?
