Reopen each of your html files in Wordpad and resave them, using the "Save As" option of the file option of the main menu. Select "Text Doent" from the "Save as type:" field of the "Save As" dialog. This will strip all the control character for rich text. Put your filenames in quotes to prevent WP from forcing the ".txt" file extension.
