What is wrong with acquiring houses and fields?
Look at the CEV and ESV translations of the same page and you will see that it is referring to people who acquire several houses and fields for themselves (kinda like royalty/music stars/movie stars/CEOs/whatever who have 5+ different houses, all big & fancy, that they use for their holidays and whatnot and that they have people constantly keeping in top condition for them). It's selfish & materialistic and means others are more likely to have to go without. Verses 9 and 10 are basically saying that a day will come when such people will get almost nothing for their work, and their houses will have to be abandoned with nobody to ever live in them again (so I guess the implication is that they'll fall apart and end up "condemned" by the local council or whatever).
