Why was Ulysses S Grant so popular?

Ulysses S. Grant is today considered one of the worst presidents of all time, but he seemed to have been very popular during his presidency. San Francisco has a street named after him, his monument sits in front of the Capitol building, and his tomb is grander than Lincolns. Why was Grant so popular and why is he now considered so bad?
